About Joan Jim
Joan Jim is a Malaysian singer, arranger, composer, and guitarist, born in Sabah, Borneo. She is widely recognized for her distinctive Latin jazz vocal style, with a repertoire that spans Bossa Nova, Samba, Afro-Cuban, and Salsa.
Drawing inspiration from legendary artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Astrud Gilberto, and Flora Purim, Joan has developed a rich and expressive musical identity. Her influences extend to a diverse range of jazz and contemporary artists, including Stacey Kent, Esperanza Spalding, Eliane Elias, Gretchen Parlato, Sade, Roberta Flack, Randy Crawford, Rachelle Ferrell, Laura Fygi, Ursula Dudziak, and Kate Davis. While Latin jazz and swing remain at the heart of her artistry, she is also deeply influenced by post-bop musicians such as Joe Lovano and Kenny Garrett. Her broader musical inspirations include Joe Pass, Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Chick Corea, Fourplay, Tania Maria, and Michael Jackson.
From 2003 to 2013, Joan was based in Kuala Lumpur, where she actively performed across the local music circuit. She has appeared at numerous regional and international festivals, including the Bandung World Jazz Festival (Indonesia, 2010), World Youth Jazz Festival (Indonesia, 2013; Malaysia, 2012 & 2013), KL International Jazz Festival (2012), Borneo Jazz Festival Preview (2012), Jazz Catz Music Rendezvous Festival (2014), Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival (2014 & 2017), Kuching Waterfront Jazz Festival (2017), and Sabah Jazz (2019). Proud of her heritage, Joan made history as the first Dusun vocalist—an indigenous ethnic group from Sabah—to be featured at the World Youth Jazz Festival in Indonesia in 2013.
An alumna of the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA), Joan has built an impressive and diverse portfolio. In 2011, she contributed as a vocal instructor and backing vocalist for Feshun, the first Maldivian contemporary jazz album. In 2012, she was selected by Disney Malaysia to voice Belle in the Bahasa Malaysia dub of Beauty and the Beast for television, performing songs such as “Belle,” “Belle (Reprise),” and “Something There.” She reprised the role in Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas, performing the song “Stories.” Joan has also appeared on numerous RTM Malaysia television programs and radio interviews, and has collaborated with notable Malaysian and Indonesian musicians including Steve Thornton, Idang Rasjidi, and Lewis Pragasam.
Beyond performing and composing, Joan is dedicated to music education. She runs Joan’s Music Centre, where she teaches private lessons in vocals, guitar, and piano for both children and adults. She is also regularly invited to conduct music workshops and to serve as a guest judge for music competitions throughout Malaysia.
Joan Jim is the founder of several musical projects, including the Borneo Big Band, a twelve-piece ensemble based in Kota Kinabalu; Grupo Da Bossa, a Latin jazz group; and the Blue Note Band, which focuses on classic jazz standards.
